3. Description of work
â€ś By building the new transport way connection Mannheim â€“ Stuttgart of the DB (German Railway), a new arrival hall and a signal box structure were necessary in Hockenheim as a conjunction railway station between the Rhein Valley railway and the new track line. The new railway station substitutes the former one that was given up because of the changed traffic routing. The space of the old railway station and the removed track line now form a municipal recreation area. Characteristic for the new track in the urban area is the deeper route construction for 4 km and the additional 3 km long sound insulating wall because of soundproofing reasons. Its compostition was created by the sculptor E.O.K. Simon, who also developed the first preliminary planning for the railway station in this context.
The program for this relatively small structure besides containing a signal box with service spaces, a counter hall for ticket sales and a sojourn of the travellers, also contains a predestrian bridge over the railtracks, platform stairs and roofs, bike parking areas as well as a kiosk.
Most of the volume of the space program consists of the technical premises, whose functional and spacial organisation is conditioned by the going railway concern. By the comparison of closed cubes for the technique and the transparent steel-glass construction for the public area, formally independent, corresponding structures express the speciality of this task.
The answer to the freestanding, a littte bit elevated side in the peripherie, is the corner situation of the tower like signal box, the rounding of the glazed counter hall and the spacial decomposition of the singular structures. Perspective and silhoutte are changing from different viewpoints. The diversity of the composition elements connects a tautly detail treatment, colour and material choice.â€ť
