3. Description of work
The long structure of the new crematorium for Karlsruhe cemetery is parallel to the old cemetery wall.
Between the cemetery wall and the building arises a spacious area with a site development way to drive up, visible through the long cantilevering roof. The closed backside of the structure turns towards the grave fields.
The new building serves exclusively to the operation of the cremation , funeral obsequies don't take place here. The building divides to 2 structures on both sides of the hall zone:
The 2-story oven- and technique sector (ground level, basement and roof age) and the 1- story adjoining room sector.
The room formation and the construction are affiliated from the requirement of extension of the system for further "oven lines" (cooling chamber, oven room, filter room). Therefore, the exterior wall along the oven line is built dismountable.
A shell of bracket mounted timber fins of untreated larch timber, summarising the single zones and protecting of insight and incident solar radiation surrounds the façade of the technical structure, consisting of a cooling chamber, a preparation room, an oven room and filter techniques, without completely bulk heading off the structure to the exterior.
The façade of the adjoining room sector with the entrance zone is closed with timber wall elements, there are window openings from the floor to the ceiling in the sector of the workplaces.
The front of the structure is wainscotted with sandstone, the material of the old cemetery wall.
The interior is dominated by the many perspectives and views and by the choice of simple materials, corresponding to the utilisation: fair-faiced mansory of concrete brick, grey scumbled or tiled, wooden doors, visible installation lines. The two ovens are painted in a strong blue.
An arstist designed the glass surfaces of the entrance and windscreen doors.
